Course aims of the one day Paediatric First Aid course: The aim of this course is to give you the basics of first aid for children and the confidence to instinctively deal with conditions and situations like choking, burns, allergic reaction and CPR on a baby or infant.

Course content: This Course content covers the essential life saving skills for babies, infants and young children in play settings and the home environment. Each course can be adapted to mirror the working environment and surroundings of your particular child care setting. Course content includes:

  • Health and safety (first aid) regulations
  • First Aid Priorities
  • Choking – Child and Baby
  • Resuscitation (CPR) – Child and Baby
  • Bleeding and Shock
  • Burns and Scalds
  • Anaphylactic shock
  • Eye and Ear Injuries
  • Fractures
  • Meningitis and Febrile Convulsions
  • Broken Bones
  • Foreign Objects
  • Recording accidents and incidents
  • First Aid box

Assessment and certification: No independent assessment is necessary for the paediatric first aid training as the tutor will carry out an ongoing assessment during the course itself. All delegates will receive a Certificate of Attendance (subject to passing the assessment) which is valid for 3 years. In addition to the care for the children, staff also need to have general first aid cover.

As low risk places of employment for most nurseries and schools, an Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification will be sufficient with enough staff trained to cover absences caused by holidays, training, sickness and other factors.

The Childcare Register is for providers who care for children aged up to 17. There are two parts – one is compulsory, one is voluntary. For more information please visit the OFSTED Early Years and Childcare Registers page for useful information.
